Bert and Fay Havens House, Stone house in Hazelton, Idaho.

The Bert and Fay Havens House is a stone residence in Hazelton that combines lava rock walls with stuccoed gables and a wraparound porch. The porch extends across about three-quarters of the facade, and the structure features multiple cross gables that define its roofline on a substantial property.

The house was built in 1927 by stonemason Fred Kilgore using local lava stone materials. These materials were transported across the frozen Lake Wilson by horse teams, reflecting how construction projects depended on seasonal conditions.

The house displays a blend of American Craftsman bungalow design and western building traditions typical of the region. The lava rock walls and wraparound porch reflect how local builders adapted their craft to available materials and the landscape.

The building sits on a larger property and features multiple entry points including generous porch access. The lava stone construction and rustic design may require careful footing during a visit, so sturdy footwear is recommended.

The interior carpentry was designed and executed by Fay Havens, the owner, who personally crafted the woodwork inside. This was unusual for the era, as homeowners rarely took on skilled construction work themselves.
