Naujaat

Naujaat sits at the southern tip of the Melville Peninsula along Hudson Bay, where tundra and coastline define the landscape. The settlement functions as a small administrative center for the surrounding region.

A Hudson's Bay Company trading post began operations in 1916, followed by Revillon Frères in 1923, establishing permanent European presence. The settlement grew as a supply center for hunting and fishing territories.

The community keeps alive traditional ways through hunting, fishing, and sealing that shape daily life today. Local artisans create carved works from materials found in the region.

The place is reachable only by ship or airplane, so supplies are limited and daily goods cost more than elsewhere. Visitors should prepare for rough weather, cold, and extended darkness during winter months.

The settlement sits precisely on the Arctic Circle, where the sun stays above the horizon for weeks in summer and never appears for weeks in winter. This phenomenon shapes daily routines and the body's natural rhythms.
