Tour KPMG, Office skyscraper in Downtown Montreal, Canada
Tour KPMG is a 34-story office tower that rises 146 meters above Montreal with postmodern architectural design and steel frame construction. Beneath the building sits a major shopping center with direct connections to the city's underground pedestrian network.
The building was constructed in 1987 as Maison des Coopérants and renamed in 2005 when KPMG became the primary tenant. Its creation involved a complex engineering solution to incorporate the existing historic church into the new development.
The building connects the street level to Montreal's underground shopping network, creating a bridge between above and below ground spaces. Locals pass through daily, often unaware of the historic church resting above the modern retail areas beneath their feet.
The building is located at 600 de Maisonneuve Boulevard West and is easily accessible by metro, particularly from McGill station. The underground connections make it convenient to walk between different parts of the city, even in bad weather.
During construction, the existing Christ Church Cathedral was lifted onto concrete pillars to make room for the shopping center below. This engineering accomplishment allowed one of the city's oldest church buildings to be preserved while a modern complex was built around it.
