Canyons of the Escalante, Canyon system in southern Utah, United States.

The Canyons of the Escalante form an extensive network of narrow gorges, high rock walls, natural arches, and hidden water pockets across southern Utah. The terrain shifts between wide basins and surprisingly tight passages that spread across thousands of square kilometers.

The Escalante River was the last major river on the continent to receive an official name, flowing through landscapes shaped by water over millions of years. The canyons formed through continuous erosion and create one of the region's most geologically complex systems.

The canyons have been home to different peoples for thousands of years, with rock art and ancient dwelling sites visible throughout the system. Visitors can encounter traces of these settlements in many parts of the canyon network.

The best time for hiking is spring and fall, when temperatures are moderate and water flows in the streams. Good footwear and plenty of water are essential, as trails can be steep and shade is scarce.

Hundreds of slot canyons cut through the region, some so narrow that you must turn sideways to pass through, yet reaching depths of hundreds of meters. These extreme proportions make each visit distinctive and demand skill when navigating.
