Navajo Mountain

Navajo Mountain, Mountain summit in San Juan County, United States.

Navajo Mountain is a free-standing laccolith formation within the Colorado Plateau, rising approximately 3,166 meters above sea level. This geological feature was created when magma pushed between rock layers, and its distinctive shape dominates the landscape of the region.

In 1864, the mountain served as a refuge for Navajo people during a forced relocation campaign when the United States Army was moving Native Americans. This period left deep marks on the region's history and remains part of the collective memory of the affected communities.

Known as Naatsisʼáán in Navajo, meaning Earth Head, it holds spiritual importance for three Native American tribes whose traditions and practices remain connected to the land. The mountain figures in sacred stories and ceremonies that continue to shape how these communities understand and relate to their surroundings.

Visitors need a permit from the Navajo Nation to enter the area, and climbing directly on the mountain itself is not allowed. These restrictions protect the land and ensure access happens only through approved routes and with proper preparation.

The mountain's slopes support the rare Navajo Mountain beardtongue, a plant species that grows only at this high elevation. This specialized plant life shows how the mountain's location creates its own ecological system found nowhere else.
