Antelope Canyon, Slot canyon in Page, United States
Antelope Canyon is a slot canyon near Page in Arizona, divided into two separate sections called Upper and Lower. The red sandstone walls form narrow corridors that wind through the rock, sometimes barely wider than a meter (three feet) across.
Water from surrounding plateaus carved through the Navajo Sandstone over millions of years, shaping the passageways. Flash floods still rush through the openings and continue to deepen the walls.
Navajo guides lead all visitors through the passageways, sharing stories about their relationship with this sacred place. Many speak their own language during tours and point out how water and light have shaped the forms in the rock.
Both sections require guided tours with authorized Navajo operators, and advance booking is especially important between March and October. The upper section sits at ground level, while the lower one involves metal stairs and ladders to enter.
Sunlight enters through the upper openings between spring and fall, creating bright columns that reach down to the floor. These light displays last only a few minutes and appear mostly around midday.
