Wrather Arch, Natural arch in Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness, Arizona
The sandstone formation rises 165 feet high with a span of 180 feet, forming a massive geological structure in Wrather Canyon, northern Arizona.
Royce K Knight, a pilot from Page, Arizona, discovered this natural arch during a flight over Glen Canyon in 1963, leading to its measurement and documentation.
The National Geographic Society named the arch after one of its trustees and published its first measurements in a February 1966 news bulletin.
Accessing the arch requires a challenging 18-mile hike through Paria Canyon, with mandatory permits obtained from the Bureau of Land Management office in Kanab.
The continuous process of rock flaking under pressure creates a dynamic geological environment, with fragments regularly falling from the arch structure.
