Gunsight Butte, Sandstone butte in Glen Canyon, Utah.
Gunsight Butte is a sandstone formation in Glen Canyon that rises approximately 1,000 feet (305 m) above Lake Powell's surface. Its distinctive shape features two peaks separated by a central notch that resembles a rifle sight.
This sandstone formation developed about 160 million years ago during the Jurassic period from sediments of an ancient tidal flat. The Entrada Sandstone layers were later shaped into this distinctive form through erosion and weathering.
The geological formation stands as a reference point for photographers and outdoor enthusiasts exploring the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.
The butte is best viewed from Alstrom Point, which is accessed via an unpaved 23-mile route from Big Water that requires a high-clearance vehicle. Conditions are most passable during dry seasons, and visitors should bring adequate supplies and water.
The summit sits at an elevation where it transforms into an island when Lake Powell's water levels rise. This periodic isolation creates a unique geographic feature rarely seen elsewhere in the region.
