Capanna Motterascio sits at 2,172 meters in the Adula Alps and houses approximately 70 people across ten rooms with shared facilities. The refuge includes a dining area, kitchen, and basic services for overnight stays in the high mountains.
This refuge was built in 1967 and underwent significant updates during the 1980s and 1990s as mountain tourism grew. A wooden extension with copper cladding was added in 2006, expanding its capacity and adapting to modern needs.
This refuge brings together hikers from many backgrounds who share meals and overnight stays in its common dining area. The setting follows the simple, welcoming traditions that mountain huts in the Swiss Alps are known for.
The hut can be reached after roughly two hours of hiking from Luzzone dam or via a longer four-hour approach from the valley at Campo Blenio. Sturdy footwear and plenty of water are essential, especially if starting from the lower valley route.
From this location, hikers can reach and view several distinctive peaks, including Piz Terri and Pizzo Guida, which rise prominently in every direction. The views of the Luzzonesee reservoir below add another dimension to the mountain experience.
