Whampoa station, Underground metro station in Kowloon City District, Hong Kong.
Whampoa station is an underground metro stop in Kowloon City District, Hong Kong, built with a single island platform serving trains in both directions. It has four exits that lead out to different streets, residential blocks, and a shopping center in the immediate vicinity.
The station opened in 2016 as part of an extension of the Kwun Tong Line to better serve dense residential areas in this part of Kowloon. The construction required adapted drilling methods because of the tight urban environment and the existing buildings above and around the site.
The station name comes from the Whampoa Dockyard, which once operated in this part of Kowloon and shaped the identity of the surrounding neighborhood. One of the exits leads directly into a shopping center built to resemble a ship, a reference to that seafaring past.
All four exits are equipped with escalators and elevators, making the station easy to navigate for most visitors. Before leaving the platform, check which exit leads closest to your destination, as each one opens onto a different part of the neighborhood.
During peak hours, roughly half of the trains on this line turn around at a different terminal and do not reach this station. This means wait times here can be noticeably longer during busy periods, so it is worth factoring that in when planning a trip.
