Hong Kong Museum of History, History museum in Tsim Sha Tsui East, Hong Kong.
The Hong Kong Museum of History spreads across two floors and includes eight galleries that show different aspects of the region. The tour follows a thematic order and leads from natural history rooms to modern sections with photographs and documents.
The institution began in 1975 when the city art museum was divided into two separate institutions. The building at its current site opened in the late nineties and sits next to the science museum.
The permanent exhibition guides visitors through reconstructed streets, old shops and traditional living spaces that show life in past centuries. Many exhibits come from everyday life and give a direct impression of how the city changed over generations.
A visit usually takes two to three hours depending on how much time you spend in each area. The exhibition rooms are accessible by lift and the tour can be divided into several sections.
Besides the main building, the institution runs several smaller museums across the city, including a coastal defence museum and a folk house. These branches focus on specific topics and complement the central collection.
