Chicago Basin, Alpine basin in San Juan Mountains, Colorado.
Chicago Basin is an alpine depression in the San Juan Mountains at roughly 11,200 feet elevation, surrounded by three 14,000-foot peaks named Mount Eolus, Sunlight Peak, and Windom Peak. The terrain consists of open tundra meadows and rocky slopes that remain snow-covered for much of the year.
The area served as a mineral extraction site during Colorado's mining boom of the 1800s, with operations targeting valuable ores in the mountains. Evidence of these past operations remains visible in scattered ruins and mining infrastructure throughout the basin.
The basin draws mountaineers and hikers seeking to climb the three surrounding peaks, creating bonds through shared outdoor pursuits. The location serves as a gathering point for people pursuing high-altitude adventures in remote alpine terrain.
Visitors must ride the Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad to Needleton station, then hike six miles with roughly 2,800 feet (850 m) of elevation gain to reach the basin. The trail crosses rocky terrain and steep sections, so solid hiking experience and proper alpine equipment are needed.
Mountain goats roam the area regularly and often wander close to campsites searching for salt and food scraps. Visitors must maintain distance and secure all provisions to avoid unwanted wildlife interactions and potential property damage.
