Red River, Mountain resort town in Taos County, New Mexico.
Red River is a town in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains at about 2643 meters elevation, surrounded by Carson National Forest with many areas for outdoor activities. The settlement sits in a small mountain valley and offers access to hiking trails, skiing, and wild landscapes.
The area developed from a mining camp beginning in 1895, extracting gold, silver, and copper from the mountains. After mining declined around 1905, the town gradually shifted toward tourism as its economic focus.
The Memorial Motorcycle Rally brings riders together each year, drawing enthusiasts from across the region. This gathering has become central to how the town defines itself and how visitors experience the mountain community.
The town offers around 57 ski runs in winter, with the base at about 2665 meters elevation. Visitors should prepare for steep terrain and cold conditions, especially when traveling between November and March.
In 2019, the town supplied the Christmas tree displayed at the United States Capitol. This honor reflected the region's natural resources and demonstrated the state's continued traditions.
