Desolation Canyon, Canyon and National Historic Landmark in eastern Utah, United States.

Desolation Canyon is a deep gorge system carved by the Green River that stretches across multiple counties in eastern Utah. The river passage contains numerous named rapids and cuts through rock layers that reveal the geological history of the region.

John Wesley Powell's expedition through the canyon in 1869 was one of the first scientific journeys to document this remote area. His work helped establish knowledge about the geology and geography of the western United States.

Rock art covers many canyon walls, showing the marks left by people who lived here for centuries. These images reveal how ancient communities understood and used this river landscape.

Access by boat requires permits from local authorities, and visitors should plan for a multi-day river journey through the rapids. The best time to navigate the canyon is during spring and summer when water flow is manageable.

The canyon contains one of the largest concentrations of unusual erosional formations including natural arches and stone pinnacles spread across a vast area. These shapes were carved by water and wind over millions of years and create a striking geological landscape.
