Buckhorn Draw Pictograph Panel

The Buckhorn Draw Pictograph Panel is a rock wall art site that stretches roughly 130 feet along a sandstone wall, displaying numerous red and white painted figures and spiritual symbols. The artwork is visible directly beside the road and requires no hiking to reach.

Artists created these paintings thousands of years ago, with the oldest works originating from an early art style that was later overlaid by other groups. These successive artistic phases show how different peoples used this location across a long span of time.

The panel displays layered artwork from different cultures, with Fremont art overlaying earlier Barrier Canyon paintings. This layering tells the story of successive groups who left their marks at this location.

The location sits just beside a road north of the San Rafael campground and is easy to reach without requiring a hike. Visitors should keep in mind that the area is quite exposed and offers limited shelter from sun and weather.

Authorities conducted extensive work in the 1990s to preserve the artwork from earlier damage and secure the paintings. This was a major effort to protect these ancient creations for future generations.
