Conundrum Hot Springs, Natural hot springs in Pitkin County, United States.
Conundrum Hot Springs is a group of natural thermal pools in Pitkin County, Colorado, sitting at around 11,200 feet (3,400 m) above sea level along Conundrum Creek. The pools are spread across a small open valley, each one varying slightly in water temperature.
The springs were known to Native peoples of the region long before European settlers arrived, and were later encountered by gold miners passing through in the 1800s. When mining activity in the area faded, the site was left largely untouched.
Visitors who make the long hike tend to share a sense of camaraderie once they arrive, gathering around the pools in a relaxed and informal way. The remote setting encourages people to slow down and spend time in the water without any of the usual distractions.
Getting to the springs requires a long hike with a steady climb, so plan for a full day and bring warm layers, as conditions at this altitude can change fast. Overnight camping near the pools is allowed and is a common way to avoid rushing the return trip.
Snow can linger around the pools well into summer, creating an unusual contrast between the hot water and the cold mountain air just above the surface. Many visitors find that this contrast, not just the water itself, is what stays with them after the trip.
