Brand Building, Bank building in downtown Aspen, United States
The Brand Building is a two-story sandstone structure located at the corner of South Galena Street and East Hopkins Avenue in downtown Aspen. Its exterior displays late 19th-century craftsmanship, while the ground floor now features sleek modern storefronts and awnings that serve luxury retail shops.
The building was constructed in 1891 during Colorado's Silver Boom by David Marks Hyman, a Bavarian-born lawyer based in Cincinnati. It initially housed a bank and represents the commercial activity that flourished when silver mining brought wealth to the region.
The building reflects how Aspen shifted from a mining center to an upscale destination, with the street-level shops showing this transformation directly. The luxury boutiques now housed inside tell a story about who visits and lives in the town today.
The building sits at a central street corner, making it easy to reach on foot. The storefronts are openly accessible, and there are sidewalk areas to walk through and look around.
In the 1920s, the corner space that once held the bank became a drive-through gas station. This shift shows how quickly the building adapted to serve new community needs as transportation habits changed.
