Flat Tops Wilderness Area, Nature reserve in Eagle County, Colorado, US
Flat Tops Wilderness Area is a large nature reserve in White River National Forest featuring plateaus, lakes, and mountain peaks. The landscape shows flat-topped summits and is crossed by over 160 trails.
The area was designated as a Primitive Area in 1932 for conservation purposes. It was later expanded and gained Wilderness Area status.
The Devil's Causeway is a narrow rock ridge that hikers cross while moving through the landscape. This passage shows how visitors directly experience the dramatic geological formations.
Visitors should bring printed maps since the area has no cell phone coverage and motorized vehicles are not allowed. Conditions can change quickly and good preparation is important.
The area contains around 110 lakes and 100 kilometers of trout streams, making it popular with anglers. This water landscape was shaped by volcanic activity and basalt flows.
