Wheatland Reservoir, body of water
Wheatland Reservoir is a man-made lake in Platte County covering approximately 280 acres, built to supply water for irrigation farming. The site features three well-maintained parking areas, restroom facilities, two concrete boat ramps accessible to people with disabilities, and fishing docks managed jointly by the Wheatland Irrigation District and Wyoming Game and Fish Department.
The reservoir was constructed to store water diverted from the Laramie River for irrigation purposes in Platte County's agricultural areas. It operates under a management agreement between the Wheatland Irrigation District and the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, combining agricultural needs with recreational access.
The location is open year-round, though winter access may be affected by snow on roads and parking areas. Visitors should check the Wyoming Game and Fish Department regulations before visiting, including restrictions on fireworks and a five-day camping limit, to ensure a smooth outdoor experience.
The reservoir is home to several fish species including walleye, yellow perch, smallmouth bass, and channel catfish that anglers prize for their quality and size. Water continuously flows from the Laramie River, making this site a key part of a larger system supporting regional agriculture and providing food sources for the local ecosystem.
