Twin Lakes, Glacial lakes in Sawtooth Mountains, Idaho
Twin Lakes comprises North and South bodies of water connected by a narrow strip of land, situated at roughly 2700 meters elevation in the Sawtooth Mountains. Both lakes are surrounded by rocky peaks and alpine terrain typical of this mountain range.
The area was protected when the Sawtooth National Recreation Area was established to preserve these lakes and their mountain surroundings. Since then, both lakes have remained part of this protected landscape.
The lakes draw hikers and fishing enthusiasts who come to explore the high mountain terrain during the warmer months. These waters remain a quiet retreat for people seeking outdoor activities away from crowded areas.
Access is via marked hiking trails through Sawtooth National Forest, and checking current conditions before arrival is important. At this elevation, weather can change quickly, and trails may have snow into late spring and early summer.
The narrow strip connecting the two lakes creates an unusual landscape where you can see from one lake to the other across a thin bridge of land. This geographic feature makes the location distinctive within the alpine region.
