Rattlesnake Station, Stage station in Mountain Home, Idaho.
Rattlesnake Station was a stage station in Mountain Home, Idaho, located at the intersection of Rocky Bar Road and the Oregon Trail. It operated as a central hub where coaches stopped to exchange freight and passengers, allowing travelers to continue their journeys across the region.
Ben Holladay established this station in 1864 as a stop on his Overland Stage Line connecting Salt Lake City, Utah, with Walla Walla, Washington. It became an important location serving the growing demands of westbound travel.
The station served as a meeting point where travelers, settlers, and local groups exchanged news and goods during the westward expansion. These encounters shaped the social fabric of the region and showed how different people connected along the trade routes.
A historical marker commemorates the site at milepost 102.7 on U.S. Highway 20, north of Industrial Way, making it easy to locate. The roadside location allows visitors to stop and reflect on the role of stage stations in early travel routes.
When owners changed the station name to Mountain Home in 1878, many buildings were physically moved by mule teams to the new railroad location. This unusual relocation shows how early settlers adapted when trade and travel routes shifted.
