Seeley Lake is a small mountain community in Missoula County that spans about 13 square miles and sits at an elevation of 4,000 feet (1,225 meters). The area combines forested hillsides with the lake itself, which gives the community its name.
Jasper Seely built the first cabin here in 1881 when the area was called Clearwater Lake. He later became the initial ranger of the Lewis and Clarke Forest Reserve, shaping the early management of the surrounding wilderness.
The name honors Jasper Seely, an early settler whose family put down roots here. Residents share a strong connection to mountain living and outdoor traditions that shape daily life in the community.
The community is accessible via Montana Highway 83, which connects from the south at Clearwater Junction to Highway 200 and runs north toward the town of Bigfork. Visitors should note that roads pass through mountain terrain and winter conditions can be challenging.
