Little Tom Mountain, Protected area in Holyoke, Massachusetts, US
Little Tom Mountain covers approximately 30 acres of deciduous and mixed forests with hemlock and hardwood species interspersed throughout. The landscape includes natural seasonal pools that provide habitat for water-dependent wildlife and reflect the varied terrain of the protected land.
The mountain contains fossilized dinosaur trackways from the Triassic period, dating back around 200 million years when different creatures inhabited this region. These ancient impressions in the rock provide evidence of how dramatically the landscape and life forms have changed.
The preserve serves local residents as a retreat for observing native wildlife and experiencing the natural rhythm of the forest throughout the seasons. The mix of wet and dry habitats reflects how nature maintains itself without human intervention.
The Woodland Trail provides year-round access to explore the forest, though conditions vary by season. Sturdy footwear helps navigate the uneven terrain, especially after rain when paths become slippery.
The Mount Tom ridge hosts approximately 38 species of amphibians and reptiles, representing a significant portion of all such species found across Massachusetts. This concentration of herpetological diversity makes the preserve an important reference point for understanding the region's wildlife.
