Crowsnest Pass

Crowsnest Pass is a specialized municipality in southwestern Alberta that encompasses several small communities nestled within mountain valleys. The landscape features rolling terrain with forested slopes and geological formations that frame the settlements throughout the region.

The region developed in the early 20th century as coal mining operations attracted workers and created several settlement communities. In 1979, these separate towns merged to form the current specialized municipality.

Coal mining shaped the identity of this mountain community, and remnants of that era remain visible in local buildings and how residents connect with the land. The heritage survives in conversations and in places that reflect the area's working past.

The Frank Slide of 1903 occurred when a massive portion of Turtle Mountain collapsed suddenly, reshaping the valley below. This natural disaster left visible geological scars that remain prominent features of the landscape today.
