Travers Reservoir, reservoir in Alberta, Canada
Travers Reservoir is a large body of water in Alberta, located about 18 kilometers south of Vulcan, covering over 2200 hectares of open prairie landscape. The water is regularly stocked with walleye and trout, surrounded by flat grasslands and wide views in every direction.
The dam was built to control water flow and supply water to nearby farming and communities. Over time, the site evolved from a purely practical water management facility into a popular recreation area for outdoor activities.
The name comes from early settlers in the area. Today it remains a quiet place where visitors practice local traditions like fishing and camping while taking in the wide prairie views.
Travers Dam campground is located on the southeast side and offers sites for tents and small RVs with water access. In winter the area remains open for day visits but without services and only accessible on foot, with ice thickness and conditions to be checked before any ice activities.
The remote location and flat terrain create excellent stargazing conditions with minimal light pollution at night. On clear nights visitors can see a dense canopy of stars stretching to the horizon, making it a memorable experience often overlooked by those focused on daytime activities.
