N-Bar Ranch

The N-Bar Ranch is a large cattle operation spread across about 60,000 acres in central Montana. The property features rolling forests, river valleys, and creeks near the Snowy Mountains, with original buildings from the 1880s still standing on the land.

A banker from Helena purchased the property in 1885 and expanded it by buying nearby land. The ranch changed ownership in 1913 when it was sold to a farming company.

The historic buildings on the property tell the story of early cattle ranching in Montana. They show how people worked and lived during that era of the frontier.

The land supports thousands of animals year-round through its natural resources and water rights established long ago. Visitors should prepare for remote terrain and be aware of limited access routes.

The property is home to a large elk population and contains several creeks where trout thrive. This wildlife flourishes in the undisturbed forests and waterways of the region.
