Malmstrom Air Force Base, Military air base in Great Falls, Montana, United States
Malmstrom Air Force Base is a military installation in Great Falls, Montana, serving as a command center for missile operations across the northern Great Plains. The facility includes runways, administrative buildings, and residential areas for service members and their families spread across several square kilometers of open terrain.
The base opened in 1942 as Great Falls Army Air Base to support the Lend-Lease Program during World War II. Thousands of aircraft passed through for delivery to the Soviet Union before the facility transitioned to missile defense operations in later decades.
The base maintains a diverse population of military personnel, with the 2010 census recording 3,472 residents from multiple ethnic and racial backgrounds.
Access to the base is strictly controlled and limited to authorized personnel, so civilian visits require advance clearance. The surrounding area lies in a remote part of Montana where winters are very cold and summers are dry.
The 341st Missile Wing operates missile sites spread across the Great Plains, monitored from underground bunkers. These facilities remain largely invisible in the landscape, marked only by small surface structures.
