Arctomys Cave, Cave system in Mount Robson Provincial Park, Canada.
Arctomys Cave is a limestone cave system beneath Trio Mountain in Mount Robson Provincial Park, extending over 3400 meters through passages and descending about 500 meters vertically. The cave features five distinct sections that transition from steep drops to more horizontal corridors.
The cave was discovered in 1911 by George R. B. Kinney during an Alpine Club of Canada and Smithsonian expedition, with initial exploration reaching about 75 meters below the surface. Comprehensive surveys were later conducted between 1971 and 1973 by university teams and caving groups.
Members from McMaster University, Guelph University, and the Albert Speleological Society conducted extensive surveys between 1971 and 1973.
Access to the cave requires specialized caving equipment and experience due to the steep vertical sections and complex passages. Good physical fitness and familiarity with rope techniques are essential for safe exploration.
The Straw Gallery section showcases delicate mineral formations hanging from the ceiling, including thin calcite crystals that resemble drinking straws. These fragile formations develop slowly from water dripping over thousands of years.
