Fort Sill, Military base and training facility in Comanche County, Oklahoma, United States.
Fort Sill is a military installation in Comanche County in southwestern Oklahoma serving primarily as a training center for United States Army artillery units. The grounds include training ranges, residential areas for military families, administrative buildings, and a large military museum dedicated to field artillery history.
The installation was founded in 1869 during the Indian Wars as a frontier post under the command of General Philip Sheridan. In the following decades, the site transformed from an outpost into a permanent training facility for artillery forces.
The museum displays over 30,000 items from two centuries of American artillery history and is open to visitors by prior registration. Many of the cannons and guns stand outdoors on the museum grounds and can be seen up close.
Access to the base requires a security checkpoint at the main gate, and visitors should bring valid identification. The museum and certain outdoor areas can be visited by prior arrangement, though movement is restricted to approved zones.
Apache leader Geronimo spent his final 15 years here as a prisoner of war and was buried in the nearby Apache cemetery after his death in 1909. His grave became a memorial site that visitors can reach with military clearance.
