State of Sequoyah, Proposed Native American state in Eastern Oklahoma Territory, United States.

The State of Sequoyah was a proposed territory covering the eastern half of present-day Oklahoma, designed to preserve Native American rule and self-governance. The project aimed to create a separate political entity that would serve the rights and interests of Indigenous peoples.

In 1905, leaders from the Five Civilized Tribes organized a constitutional convention in Muskogee to establish a Native-controlled state. This effort represented a direct response to impending union with Oklahoma Territory.

The name honors Sequoyah, a Cherokee scholar who created the Cherokee writing system, reflecting the strong Indigenous cultural roots of the region. Visitors can connect with this heritage through historical sites and museums scattered across the area today.

The proposed constitution included provisions for tribal rights, governmental separation of powers, and trade protections for Indigenous interests. Today, visitors can explore historical documents and details of this proposal in regional archives and museums.

Despite receiving strong support from both Native Americans and white settlers, Congress rejected the statehood proposal. The rejection stemmed from political concerns about admitting a state that would likely lean Democratic.
