Pythian Building

The Pythian Building is an Art Deco office structure in downtown Tulsa defined by a clear grid framework of vertical piers. The facade features diamond-shaped patterns and blue terra cotta accents on the spandrels between floors, creating a striking visual rhythm.

Construction started in 1929 as the Gillette-Tyrrell Building, but the Great Depression halted work for years. The Knights of Pythias later purchased the unfinished structure and brought it to completion.

The entrance lobby displays a geometric floor pattern that climbs the walls, creating a sense of order and elegance throughout the space. Visitors immediately notice the careful detail work in the materials and room arrangement, reflecting the craftsmanship of that era.

The building sits at the intersection of West 5th Street and South Boulder Avenue in downtown Tulsa with multiple entrances accessible from both sides. Visitors can freely explore the lobby and public areas during standard business hours.

This structure blends two distinct Art Deco styles, Modern and Zig Zag, setting it apart from other buildings of its time. This combination of approaches is less commonly seen and shows the architects' creativity in the design.
