Dochula Pass, Mountain pass at 3100 meters in Thimphu region, Bhutan.
Dochula Pass is a mountain pass in the Thimphu region at 3,100 meters elevation situated between Thimphu and Punakha. From this location, you can see the snow-covered peaks of the eastern Himalayan ranges stretching across the horizon.
The location gained prominence through 108 memorial chortens built in 2005 to honor Bhutanese soldiers who died in conflicts with Indian insurgents. These structures mark an important chapter in Bhutan's recent past.
The Druk Wangyal Lhakhang temple near the pass displays detailed murals showing stories from Bhutanese history and Buddhist traditions. These paintings reveal how local beliefs and spiritual practices are expressed in daily religious spaces.
Reaching this location requires about a 45-minute drive from Thimphu. The period from October through February offers the best views, as weather conditions are clearer and the mountains are more visible.
Adjacent to the pass sits a botanical garden where rhododendrons and magnolias grow abundantly, adding color to the landscape especially in spring. This garden offers a quiet spot for exploration away from the main focal points.
