The town stands at an elevation of 615 meters near the confluence of Ribeira Grande river and Ribeira da Torre tributary in northeastern Santo Antão.
The settlement traces its origins to 1462, later becoming the municipal seat of Santo Antão in 1732, marking a period of administrative development.
The Nossa Senhora do Rosário parish church represents the religious heritage of the area, while Portuguese colonial architecture defines the urban landscape.
The municipality serves 2,564 residents and contains multiple districts including Tarrafal, Rua de Agua, Rua d'Horta, and Penha de França.
