Ribeira Grande

Ribeira Grande is the administrative center of Santo Antão in Cape Verde, located in a mountainous region in the northeastern part of the island. The settlement spreads across several neighborhoods and sits in a valley where waterways converge, serving as the main hub for local governance and community life.

The town was founded in 1462 and gradually became an important administrative hub for the island. In 1732, it was designated as the municipal seat of Santo Antão, solidifying its role in regional governance.
