Petite Savane Bay, Coastal bay in Saint Patrick Parish, Dominica
Petite Savane Bay is a bay on the southeastern coast of Dominica, in Saint Patrick Parish. Rocky cliffs and dense green vegetation line the surrounding hillsides, dropping steeply toward the water below.
The village of Petite Savane and its bay were among the early settled areas along Dominica's southeastern coast, used mainly for fishing and small-scale maritime trade. In 2017, Hurricane Maria devastated the village so completely that it was permanently abandoned by its residents.
The bay is closely tied to the village of Petite Savane, which sits just above it on the hillside. Fishing remains a daily activity here, and the sight of small boats heading out in the early morning is a common part of life in this corner of Dominica.
The bay is reachable on foot along coastal paths, but the terrain is steep and uneven in places, so solid footwear is a good idea. After rainfall, the rocky sections near the water can become slippery, so take care when approaching the shore.
The village that once sat above the bay was abandoned after Hurricane Maria in 2017, leaving behind empty houses slowly being reclaimed by the surrounding vegetation. This makes the area feel unlike most coastal spots in Dominica, where the usual signs of daily life have simply disappeared.
