Higüey

Higüey is a city in southeastern Dominican Republic situated in La Altagracia Province. It developed around a center of shops, neighborhoods, and the grand Basilica, which shapes the city's appearance.

The city was founded in 1503 when Spanish settlers under Juan Ponce de León established a settlement here. It became one of the earliest European communities in the Caribbean region.

The Basilica of La Altagracia is where locals and visitors come to see the revered painting of the Virgin Mary. The religious site shapes how many people in the region mark important moments and gather together.
