Tang Lung Chau Lighthouse, Coastal lighthouse in Tsuen Wan District, Hong Kong.
Tang Lung Chau Lighthouse is a square pyramidal skeletal tower with a white lantern mounted at its top, standing 12 meters tall. The structure sends out a white flash every 5 seconds and can be seen from up to 18 nautical miles away.
Built in 1912, this lighthouse was constructed as shipping traffic to Hong Kong increased following the Suez Canal opening. It became a critical aid to navigation for vessels entering the harbor from the west.
The monument status granted in 2000 recognizes this site's role in Hong Kong's maritime past. When you visit, you can see how the structure and its surroundings tell the story of the city's connection to seafaring.
This site is located on an island and is best reached by boat from the mainland. Prepare for tidal conditions and wear suitable footwear when exploring the area around the structure.
The former lightkeeper's house beside the tower features an underground rainwater collection system built into the roof structure. This system was essential because the island has no natural freshwater sources.
