Tai O, Fishing village with stilt houses in Lantau Island, Hong Kong
Tai O sits on the western coast of Lantau Island, where a network of canals flows between rows of wooden houses raised on stilts above water.
The settlement originated in the early 19th century as a Tanka fishing community, later becoming a center for salt production with 70 acres of salt marshes by 1940.
