Lantau South Country Park

Lantau South Country Park is a large protected area on the southern side of Lantau Island, covering mountains, dense forests, and a rocky coastline. The terrain varies from steep ridges to flat sections, with beaches and coves scattered along the shore.

This protected area was established in 1978 to preserve the island's natural habitats and create recreational space for the public. The early decision to protect the land helped prevent heavy development from spreading across the island.

Fishing villages and temples sit at the park's edges, showing how local communities have lived alongside these forests and mountains for a long time. Visitors walking the trails can see how people still use the natural landscape as part of their daily routines.

The park has multiple walking routes suitable for different fitness levels, with picnic areas and rest facilities spread throughout. Starting early and bringing sturdy shoes and plenty of water is recommended, especially for longer hikes.

The park is home to rare and endangered animals like Chinese White Dolphins in coastal waters and Hong Kong Newts in the forest areas. These species are hard to spot, but their presence shows how vital this protected space is for threatened wildlife.
