Lower Cheung Sha Beach, Bathing beach in Lantau Island, Hong Kong.
Lower Cheung Sha Beach is a large bathing beach on the southern coast of Lantau Island with light sand and clear water. The bay stretches for several kilometers and is backed by steep grassy hills inland.
The area opened up to visitors with the construction of South Lantau Road in the mid-20th century. This road connected the beach to the rest of the island and made it easily accessible for the first time.
The beach serves as a gathering place for swimming and water sports, where visitors and locals use the wide sandy shoreline for leisure and bathing. Simple restaurants and food stalls line the coast, serving fresh fish dishes and local specialties.
The beach has changing rooms, showers, and restrooms available year-round. Lifeguard services operate from April to October, making these the safest months for swimming.
Water buffaloes regularly visit the creek areas near the beach, creating an unexpected encounter with wild animals during your visit. These animals are part of the island's natural ecosystem and often surprise visitors who encounter them.
