Lo Yan Shan

Lo Yan Shan is a mountain on Lantau Island that rises approximately 300 meters above sea level. The peak offers steep hiking trails that wind through thick vegetation and scattered rock formations.

The mountain served as a lookout point during Hong Kong's maritime development to monitor shipping traffic in surrounding waters. Its elevated position made it strategically valuable for tracking maritime activity across the region.

Local residents maintain traditional practices of early morning hikes to Lo Yan Shan, particularly during festivals and significant calendar dates.

The summit is reachable via the Chi Ma Wan Country Trail starting from Pui O village, which connects to multiple access points. The trail is demanding and takes a good amount of time, so allow plenty of hours for the hike.

A fire lookout building stands at the summit and monitors the southeastern portion of the island and adjoining waters. This structure is a tangible reminder of the mountain's ongoing surveillance role.
