Cheung Chau Tung Wan Beach, Public beach in Cheung Chau Island, Hong Kong.
Cheung Chau Tung Wan Beach is a public sandy beach on the eastern side of Cheung Chau Island with clear water and mountain views behind it. The bay stretches several hundred meters long and is divided into two swimming areas by a rocky headland.
Geologists found ancient rock carvings near the beach during the 1970s, and the Hong Kong government protected them as monuments in 1982. These carved rocks mark an early presence of people in this island area.
The beach served as a training ground for a local windsurfing champion who represented the territory at the Olympics.
The beach sits just a short walk from the ferry terminal and offers changing rooms, showers, toilets, and lifeguard coverage. A water sports center on site helps visitors learn about local activities.
The rocky headland that divides the two swimming areas doubles as an emergency helicopter landing pad for medical evacuations from the island. Most swimmers pass by without realizing this practical rescue function.
