Shap Long Reservoir, Irrigation reservoir in New Territories, Hong Kong
Shap Long Reservoir, also called Chi Ma Wan Reservoir, is a man-made water body on Lantau Island surrounded by wooded hills and clear streams. Today it provides water for farming and serves as a fishing spot and hiking destination for visitors exploring the natural landscape.
The reservoir was completed in 1955 to supply fresh water to nearby islands, particularly Cheung Chau, through an underwater pipeline. When a new water system connected to the mainland in the 1960s, it shifted to serving local farmers through irrigation instead.
The reservoir shows how water remains central to island life, used by local farmers for irrigation and by visitors for fishing and outdoor activities. This reflects how communities on Lantau have adapted their relationship with this resource over time.
The site can be reached via walking trails through Chi Ma Wan Peninsula that are popular with hikers and mountain bikers. Bring water and wear comfortable shoes, as the paths wind through quiet woodland at a relaxed pace.
The reservoir's clear water fed by unpolluted mountain streams supports fish species like Oryzias curvinotus and creates a habitat for rare animals including Romer's Tree Frog and the Brown Fish Owl. Over 180 bird species have been recorded in the wider woodland area nearby.
