Cheung Chau Theatre, Movie theater in Cheung Chau, Hong Kong
Cheung Chau Theatre is a former cinema on Cheung Chau island in Hong Kong, classified as a Grade III historic building. The facade carries traditional Chinese characters, and inside, the ground-floor auditorium still holds its original iron seats and screen.
The building opened in 1931 and ran as a neighborhood cinema for nearly seven decades before closing in the 1990s. It is one of only two pre-war cinemas still standing in Hong Kong.
The theatre was once the only cinema on the island, making it a central gathering point for villagers. The traditional Chinese characters still visible on the facade are a reminder of how central it once was to daily life here.
Cheung Chau island is only reachable by ferry from Hong Kong, so a visit works best as a day trip. Access to the projection room is not possible due to a broken wooden ladder, but the auditorium and facade can be seen.
There are plans to convert the building into a restaurant while keeping its historic structure in place. If this happens, the iron seats and screen may remain visible inside a dining space, an arrangement rarely seen anywhere.
