Cheung Sha, Beach at Lantau Island, Hong Kong.
Cheung Sha is a beach on Lantau Island in Hong Kong's Islands District, divided into two sections known as Upper Cheung Sha and Lower Cheung Sha. The two parts are separated by a short stretch of road, and the Lower section is generally considered the longest beach in Hong Kong.
The area was once an active fishing community that depended on the nearby coastal waters for its daily life. From the late 20th century, it gradually became a place where people from the city came to spend time away from urban Hong Kong.
The area around Cheung Sha still carries the feel of a fishing village, visible in the small eateries along the shore that serve fresh fish and traditional Cantonese dishes. Eating here feels relaxed and informal, with tables often set just steps from the water.
Getting there from central Hong Kong means taking a ferry to Mui Wo and then a bus to either section of the beach. Bringing sun protection and enough water is a good idea, as shade along the sand is hard to find during the day.
A herd of water buffalo lives near the Lower section and sometimes wades through a nearby creek, occasionally approaching the shoreline. Seeing large animals roaming freely this close to a city beach catches most visitors off guard.
