Cheung Sha, Beach at Lantau Island, Hong Kong.
Cheung Sha is a beach on Lantau Island with two distinct sections, Upper and Lower, stretching roughly 3 km along the coast. The sand is pale gold, the water is clear, and the shoreline slopes gently into the sea.
The area was once a working fishing village where boats landed daily and the community relied on the sea. Over time, especially from the late 20th century onward, it gradually became a destination where people from the city came to spend leisure time.
The area reflects its roots as a fishing community, with local eateries serving fresh seafood caught nearby and preparing traditional Cantonese meals daily. Visitors often sit in casual restaurants along the shore, experiencing how people here still connect food with the sea.
Ferry service from the city reaches Mui Wo, with buses running to both sections of the beach. It is wise to bring drinking water and sun protection, as shade is scarce and the sun exposure is intense throughout the day.
Water buffalo herds visit a creek near the Lower section and sometimes wade into the water on warm afternoons. Their presence is an unusual sight at this modern coastal spot.
