Yuen's Mansion, Grade II historic mansion in Mui Wo, Hong Kong.
Yuen's Mansion is a Grade II historic building from the early 20th century in Mui Wo, on Lantau Island in Hong Kong. It consists of several interconnected structures arranged around courtyards, set within a large plot that includes gardens and open land.
The Yuen family had the property built in the early 1900s, when Mui Wo was still a farming community on a largely rural island. Over time, as the family's presence in the area faded, the building was eventually listed for its historic value.
The building shows Hakka construction details in its thick walls and courtyard layout, which visitors can observe directly as they walk through. This style was typical of prosperous Hakka families who settled on Lantau Island and carried their mainland traditions with them.
Mui Wo is most easily reached by ferry from the Central district, and the property is a short walk from the pier. It is worth checking in advance whether access is open, as the site is not always open to visitors without a prior arrangement.
Although Mui Wo is now thought of as a quiet village, it was once a busy trading and fishing hub on Lantau, and the Yuen family's residence reflects that forgotten prosperity. The building is one of the few surviving traces of a time when the island had a far more active economic life.
