Our Lady of Joy Abbey, Trappist monastery in Islands District, Hong Kong.
Our Lady of Joy Abbey is a stone monastery on the hills of Tai Shui Hang, featuring a chapel, garden courtyard, and inscribed gates situated between Mui Wo and Discovery Bay. The buildings are set into the natural hillside, creating several levels that step down the slope.
The monastery was founded in 1955 by Chinese monks who fled the mainland during the Chinese Civil War and sought refuge on this remote island. They established the community to continue their monastic life away from political upheaval.
The monastery blends Eastern and Western religious elements, with Chinese pagodas standing alongside traditional Benedictine architecture and Latin inscriptions on the gates. The monks shape the place through their daily presence, creating a space where both traditions visibly coexist.
Access is through a hiking path of about 7 kilometers from Mui Wo or by ferry to the Trappist Haven pier. The hike is challenging and requires good fitness, so plan for adequate time and bring plenty of water.
The monastery operates a dairy facility in Yuen Long whose products are sold throughout Hong Kong stores. Many visitors do not realize the monks are actively involved in food production for the wider population beyond their spiritual work.
