East Kalimantan, Province in Borneo, Indonesia.

The territory spans 127,346 square kilometers of dense rainforests, rivers, and mountains, bordering the Celebes Sea and Makassar Strait in eastern Borneo.

The region transformed from the Kingdom of Kutai Martadipura in the 4th century to becoming an official Indonesian province in 1956 under governor APT Pranoto.

The population includes Javanese, Bugis, Banjarese, Dayak, and Kutai communities, with Islam practiced by 87 percent of inhabitants and Christianity prevalent inland.

The capital Samarinda connects to Balikpapan through major roads, while international flights operate from Balikpapan airport and domestic services from Samarinda.

The province will host Indonesia's new capital city Nusantara, featuring one of the world's oldest cave paintings dating back 40,000 years at Lubang Jeriji Saléh.
