Aranuka, Remote atoll in Gilbert Islands, Kiribati.

The triangular atoll spans 11.6 square kilometers with two main islands, Buariki and Takaeang, connected by northern sandbanks and southern reef crests.

European documentation of Aranuka began in June 1788 when seafarers Thomas Gilbert and John Marshall first recorded the island's existence in their logs.

Local traditions identify Aranuka as the central island of Kiribati, where according to mythology, the god Nareau initiated the formation of all surrounding islands.

The island maintains air connections through Aranuka Airport with two weekly flights to South Tarawa, while the Island Council operates the primary accommodation facility.

The northern section of Aranuka contains Rhizophora stylosa mangroves reaching heights over 15 meters, making them the tallest mangrove trees in Kiribati.

Military installations, cannons, and naval battle sites from 1943 remain on several islands. The Phoenix Islands Protected Area spans 408,250 square kilometers of marine habitat. Cultural venues present maritime traditions, local crafts, and historical artifacts of the Gilbert Islands.
