The Osnabrücker Hütte sits at 2,032 meters (6,666 feet) elevation in the Central Eastern Alps, nestled among the peaks and glaciers of the Ankogel group. This mountain refuge provides roughly 60 sleeping places in various forms to serve as a base for alpine visitors.
This shelter was built in 1929 to house mountaineers and hikers exploring the Eastern Alps. Its creation reflected the growing popularity of alpine mountaineering in the early 20th century.
The dining room serves regional Austrian dishes made from local ingredients, keeping alive the traditions of alpine hospitality. Visitors gather there to share meals and stories from their mountain journeys.
The hut operates from mid-June through mid-October and provides accommodation during those months. Bring warm clothes and sturdy gear, as conditions at this elevation can be challenging.
A small hydroelectric plant from 1998 powers the facility and demonstrates sustainability thinking at this high altitude. Water is cleaned using UV radiation to ensure it is safe to drink.
