Postalm, Ski resort in Salzkammergut, Austria.
Postalm is a ski resort set on a broad high plateau in the Salzburg Alps, positioned between the towns of Abtenau and Strobl. The area sits at around 1,100 meters (3,600 ft) and offers a mix of gentle downhill runs and flat open terrain served by several lifts.
Before becoming a winter sports area, the Postalm plateau was used for centuries as one of the largest summer pastures in Europe, where farmers from the surrounding valleys grazed their cattle. The shift to winter tourism happened gradually through the 20th century, and some farming activity continued alongside the new use.
The Postalm draws many local families who return season after season, treating it as a regular winter outing rather than a destination. The open layout of the plateau makes it easy for children and beginners to move around freely, which gives the place a relaxed, unhurried feel.
Parking is available right next to the lifts and rental services, so there is no long walk to reach the slopes from the car. Because the terrain is mostly flat, navigation across the resort is easy and visitors tend to find their way around without difficulty.
The plateau hosts a network of cross-country skiing trails that wind across the same ground once used as summer pasture, making it possible to ski through a working alpine landscape. This combination of ski trails and former farmland on the same terrain is something visitors rarely expect to find at a winter resort.
